CCERS Partnership Model Teacher Fellowship: An Interdisciplinary Approach to STEM Education
Erica presented a lesson developed by the Teacher Fellowship (a collaboration between scientists from Columbia and Pace University, experts from New York Harbor Foundation, and public school teachers from New York City Department of Education) to engage middle school students in hands-on-minds-on STEM-C learning activities. The Curriculum + Community Enterprise for Restoration Science (CCERS) model fellowship trains middle school teachers to engage and support their students’ exploration of STEM concepts. The presentation highlighted each element of Bybee’s 5-E Model, led attendees through one variation of an activity from the lesson plan while also sharing alternatives and soliciting ideas regarding how elements of the CCERS model could be emulated elsewhere, and provided resources that could be downloaded for further exploration and use. A video created by one of the fellowship teachers further engaged the attendees by showing how students engage with the materials, and enthusiastically share what they’re learning.
